Your Role With Us:
The Lead Specimen Management Laboratory Assistant, in addition to performing all job duties of a Laboratory Assistant, is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of the specimen management area.
  • Uphold all of the hospital and departmental policies, leading by example in attitude, performance, appearance, confidentiality and respect. The Lead will coach “in the moment” in a supportive and respectful manner.
  • Work collaboratively with Managers, Supervisors, Senior Specialists, and Clinical Teams to ensure effective operations in all areas of responsibility.
  • Contribute to the prioritization and performance of the daily workload within the department.
  • Is knowledgeable of the workflow, processes and resources, providing leadership, educational opportunities and support to the Specimen Management staff.
  • Promote and contribute to the expertise of the Specimen Management staff by providing expert-level guidance in all areas of specimen handling and processing.
  • Contribute to the assessment of the skill level and the development of team members.
  • Coordinate orientation, training, development and growth of new hires and to existing staff working in the discipline in consultation with the manager and/or supervisor.
  • Assist in the development of policies, procedures, processes, performance improvement and quality assurance in accordance with accreditation requirements.
  • Assist with staffing and scheduling as requested by the section supervisor.
Core Functions:
  • Performs staff workload responsibilities, setting high standards of performance.
  • Leads and educates team members a. Monitors daily workload and coordinates adequate staffing by working with manager or supervisor. Promotes flexibility and teamwork as workload requires. Effectively communicates status of outstanding tasks and status of department to manager, supervisor and coworkers. b. Effectively prioritizes work so that efficiency is optimal and turnaround time expectations are continually met. Flexibility in tasks and bench assignments exhibited as workload requires. c. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in work volume and staffing. d. Understands principles and procedures of each work bench; accurately responds to questions that arise from support staff, technical staff, client service staff, outreach clients or other practitioners in a supportive and respectful manner. e. Serves as a resource and educator for staff. Assists in coordinating timely training of staff for new policies and procedures as they are instituted. Helps teach staff in the effective use of Hospital and Laboratory information systems.
  • Processes and procedures a. Reviews and/or creates standard operating policies and procedures. b. Verifies and documents satisfactory equipment operation. Is responsible for maintaining equipment and notification of manager or supervisor in a timely manner of problems with equipment. c. Follows infection control procedures to ensure a safe work environment. Follows prescribed safety techniques to maintain personal and co-worker safety (wears and appropriately uses personal protective equipment per hospital and department policy as required.) Instructs staff in proper safety techniques when indicated. Promotes safe work practices.
  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree with a background in health or biological sciences preferred.
  • One and one half (1½ ) years of related work experience in a laboratory area of comparable complexity and services, exhibiting extensive and current knowledge of laboratory operations required.
  • Documented proficiency in specimen management skills and referral testing required.
